Why Planners Should Understand Flower Arrangements
The beauty of a flower and its ability to brighten up a room dates back to the time of ancient Egypt. At the time, flowers were used for a number of things to include table decorations. Accordingly Ancient Greeks used flowers for weddings and most notably the Olympics.
Today the use of flowers has kept their roots, but has drastically expanded to being used in many intricate capacities. No longer are flowers simply placed in a vase and set on a table. They create walls, overhead installations, and can even be used to create statues.
The concern with flowers is finding how to effectively use them especially for weddings and events. This is why we have asked Uche Ojunta the Owner and Creative Director behind Designs by Oochay to speak at our upcoming Design Lounge event for Wedding and Event Planners.

Andrew Roby Events – Where do you see the event/wedding industry moving to as it relates to your particular field?
Designs by Oochay – Great question! I am beginning to notice clients now have a deep appreciation for what flowers can do to enhance the decor and ambiance of the event. I predict large focal installations that catch the eye and start a conversation. Walkway immersed with flowers on the walls and ceiling, to massive floral chandeliers over the dance floor. Clients want it big and noticeable.
Andrew Roby Events – What are one or two misconceptions you have experienced while working with Wedding/Event Planners?
Designs by Oochay – A misconception I see a lot while working with planners is that certain floral arrangements are “simple.” This word gets used a lot from brides and planners as well. When working with flowers or designing an event, nothing is simple. As a floral designer I put a lot of work into each design, from creating the design to ordering the flowers, to processing the flowers, to actually designing an arrangement or installation, to day of setup. None of these are “simple”. There is a lot of work involved; hence you hire us to get the work done. If it was simple, you wouldn’t need a floral designer.
Andrew Roby Events – How would you like to push the boundaries that clients have set for themselves in order for them to have a more custom experience with you?
Designs by Oochay – Don’t get stuck on what’s available via Pinterest, Instagram, etc. Floral design is a creative art. Each arrangement or installation is custom which is extremely difficult to replicate. Most floral designers don’t like to feel restricted when creating an arrangement, in other words, we don’t really like to replicate. Trust your designer and allow him/her to have creative freedom to design especially for you. The end result is usually “WOW”
Andrew Roby Events – What key tip(s) could you offer a Wedding/Event Planner in working with you on a project?
Designs by Oochay – Communication and teamwork is key. We are hired by the client to execute an event or wedding of their dreams, and we have to work together to make sure we do exactly that. Trusting each other
Andrew Roby Events – How important is it to have planners get your feedback during the planning or design stage of an event?
Designs by Oochay – It’s extremely important to involve the floral designer in the design stage to make sure we achieve a cohesive look. We are able to design floral arrangements to fit the overall event when we are well informed. Floral designers are also able to give input on what works and what won’t work. This is based on the seasonal availability of flowers so having them involved is really important.
